Why This Care Model Was Created: A Brief Origin Story

Learn the real story behind how Mahmee began, and the people who made it possible.

Updated over 9 months ago

Mahmee was co-founded by Melissa Hanna, JD, MBA, and her mother Linda Hanna, RN, IBCLC, drawing on their personal and professional insights into maternal healthcare. Linda, a registered nurse and internationally board-certified lactation consultant, spent decades working closely with mothers and babies. Through firsthand experience, she saw the fragmentation in the U.S. healthcare system—parents struggling to connect the dots between OB-GYNs, pediatricians, lactation consultants, nutritionists, and other specialists. Melissa, with a background in business and education, recognized that technology could bring these pieces together. In 2014, they set out to create a platform that would unify care, improve access, and ultimately help parents navigate pregnancy and early parenthood with greater confidence and less confusion. By 2016, Mahmee was fully launched, offering a central hub where families could access a network of pre-screened, credentialed care providers and tailored resources.

As Mahmee grew, it garnered significant support and recognition, including funding from investors like Mark Cuban and Serena Williams. Their backing underscored the importance of improving maternal health outcomes in the U.S., where too many parents experience preventable complications and inadequate support. The team’s vision was never just about convenience; it was about addressing systemic issues and bridging the gaps that leave parents feeling isolated or overwhelmed. By integrating care providers, securely housing health data, and enabling continuous care from pregnancy through the first year postpartum, Mahmee has worked to create a more holistic, inclusive, and compassionate environment for every family who walks through its virtual doors.
